Kerala box office will see the first blockbuster for the summer and the year 2011. We are talking about the film Urumi and reports are arriving that the film has recorded hundred percent collections on the release date and the following weekend. With the summer vacation on and many holiday weekends like Vishu, Easter arriving.
Malayalam historical film directed by Santosh Sivan, written by Shankar Ramakrishnan, and produced by Prithviraj, Shaji Natesan, and Santosh Sivan under their new production company, August Cinema.It stars Prithviraj, Genelia D’Souza Prabhu Deva,Nithya Menon and Jagathy Sreekumar, and features Vidya Balan, Arya and Tabu in cameo appearances. The film is being made at a budget of more than 20 crore rupees, making it the second most expensive Malayalam film ever made after Pazhassi Raja. Urumi gets a dubbed release in Tamil as Padhinaitham Nootrandu Uraivaal and English as Vasco da Gama. The film has received international attention with the screening of its trailer at the Hong Kong film festival.
‘Urumi’, as has already been told through posters and promotional trailers, is the story of a person who wanted to kill Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who came to India in 1498 and then paid two visits later and also became the Portuguese viceroy in India. The film explores history from a purely Indian perspective and tells the story of Chiraykkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj), who had pledged to kill Vasco da Gama, who had inflicted cruelties upon many Indians and who was merciless in his ways. Kelu Nayanar is accompanied by his friend and trader Vavvali (Prabhudeva). Into this story come characters like Arackal Aisha (Genelia), Chiraykkal Bala (Nitya Menon), Chenicheri Kurup (Jagathy Sreekumar) etc.
The film begins from the modern day, where we meet Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and Tarzan (Prabhudeva), two friends who take life in an easy-going manner and who want to make some easy money. They are brought face to face with some facts from history that has got something to do with Krishna Das and which also would affect his future and perspective.
Come to the point, the 20 Crore (200 Million) budget movie was released on March 31 in 80 cinemas across Kerala. According to our source and public talk from cinemas, the movie is getting very good response. Urumi in its opening week (March 31 to April 6), has grossed approximately Rs 2.52 Cr from 77 in Kerala. It means a distributors share of Rs 1.26 Cr, making it Prithviraj’s biggest ever opening.Urumi has broken the records of Prithviraj’s previous movie Anwar at box office.
Coming week,Urumi will face Mohanlal’s China Town and Mammootty’s Doubles,these two movies going to hit the big screens on April 15 as Vishu 2011 Release.

No Malayalam movie had collected 15 crores in 3 weeks! Its a fake news. Malayalam industry doesn’t have a proper channel to calculate the exact amount. Urumi’s prediction is given according to it expected collection in following days, in Kerala. The film is yet to release in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu, and will be released in English as well – either Dubbed or with English Subs.
one has to consider the quantity of collection and return on investment.Urumi may be the biggest opener of pritvi but that does not mean it is a hit.moreover the film does not have a wide release like that of christian brothers which is still stable.so the film has to sustain for atleast a month.and i am sure it is ot going to happen as urumi is going to give screen space to china town and doubles.So URUMI will join the likes of Anwar(good opening which fizzled out),Thriller(flop from day one) and Arjunan Sakshi(Flop).

The only saving grace in this maovie is Jagathy. The rest of them are like show pieces and Prithvi looks so unreal among other characters, he might have worked hard for that bod but the character doesnt demand that and moreover looks very out of place among the other more keralite looking ones. Just a fantacy kind of cinema which fails to impress and bores to no end. Songs are just out of place and waste. Should have spend 20 crores for some worthy efforts!! Sad!
Santhosh Sivan should stick to cinematography. He is a flop director. Look what he did to Asoka in Hindi. If this film was directed by Mani Ratnam the whole movie would have been a different experience. The actors are all good but ulitmately this is a film with good frames. This happened becasue the director did not give the characters any depth, he concentrated on the frames. Moreover the dialogues are very watery and there is no depth.
I must doubt Prithviraj’s judgement when after the debacles of Asoka and Ananthabhadram he wanted Santosh Sivan to do this movie. When I saw films like Vargam, thalappavu and Classmates I thought this young man has at last become mature.
If the audience felt all the characters other than Jagathy to be showpieces it is because the characters were not given any depth. Also many songs were unnecessary like Aaro and Chalanam. They tokk away the movie’s tempo. the character of Kelu nayanar did not need Aaro.
I thought about how such scene as in Aaro were done in Holywood movies like Dances with wolves, Last of the Mohicans etc.
I am a die hard Prithiraj fan. I like all his movies. I wanted this movie to be a super duper hit. But I sincerely doubt if this movie willl be remembered for his perfromance. This movie will get awards for Genelia, photography, costume, songs etc. Now I am waiting for Manikyakallu.
Prithvi why don’t you remake the old Mammooty- Suhasini movie “Ente Upasana” ? You will fit the role perfectly. Why don’t you do a love story for a change rather than go for action and socially relevant movies? something mushy and romantic which will appeal to your fans? I think such a movie will run because such movies are not coming nowadays.

To be frank prithvi,today is 16th of may 2011,why did u go for this movie? the movie has been changed before 2 weeks from Calicut. please don’t come with 100th and 50th day posture.Low budjet manikyakallu is better than this movie.

This movie was release in AP also. In AP the telugu version of Urumi ran well. Malayalam movies standards are elevated with this movie. Definitely our telugu directors who always make crap mass masala shit should learn from malayali directors on how to make a good movie.
